Sexual addiction is something that we're developing an increased awareness of in this country. Although we don't treat it directly at the care and treatment centers, there are certain behavioral aspects of sexuality which can become compulsive and can become and addiction.

Masturbation is one of those. A person engages in a cycle so they compulsively think about the act of masturbating. Then they masturbate and then they have the sense of shame and regret and remorse about it. And then the cycle then continues. In order to break that cycle of shame and remorse they compulsively feel the need to masturbate again.

So the addiction refers to the cycle that people who compulsively masturbate find themselves in. So they obsessively think about masturbating, they don't want to do it, but they break that agreement to themselves and then they engage in the act of masturbating. Then they have sense of shame and guilt and remorse over it and that causes anxiety that they feel the need to manage by masturbating again.

So it's the cycle that we look at with masturbation and in the realm of sexual compulsiveness. We know it's an impulse that people don't have control over and that they lose control over. And so they find themselves masturbating at inappropriate times. They find themselves compulsively thinking about masturbating. And most importantly they cannot stop themselves from masturbating.
