Is It Safe to Have a Deep Tissue Massage during Pregnancy?

Learn if it is safe to have a deep tissue massage during pregnancy from celebrity massage therapist Meagan Holub in this Howcast video.

So I do get a lot of requests from prenatal clients, women who are pregnant and they're concerned that they might not be able to receive deep tissue massage when they really want one. It's obviously a time where they are having aches and pains in their low back and different areas. The body's shifting. The hips are widening. So there's a great need for deep tissue massage during that time and I do understand the hesitancy.

Prenatal massage clients do need to work with someone that is an expert in working with prenatal clients. It's really important, but there's no reason that they can't receive really nice, deep pressure, especially in that low sacrum area, in the shoulders, in the back.

There are some areas that you want to avoid, and there's definitely some points around the hands, the ears and the feet that you want to avoid because they're pressure points that can actually induce labor. So it is important that you work with an expert, and the husbands actually need to know this. You can't be giving your ladies foot massage while they're pregnant.

So it's important that you know it, but the answer to the question is yes. You can get deep tissue massage, and I absolutely highly recommend you do. And in fact, I think it's a good idea for your family to buy a package of nine for you so you can get one a month as you're carrying that little one.
