How do I know if I have skin cancer? This is a question I get regularly from my patients and it's not an easy one to answer. Late stage of skin cancer can be easily diagnosed by a dermatologist and a non-dermatologist, but that's not our goal.
Our goal is to make sure that we catch, even the early signs of skin cancer, so you can be treated with a simple excision, and that can be difficult to do on your own. If you notice a spot that doesn't look like anything else, a spot that just doesn't feel right, a spot that's persistently itchy, a spot that easily bleeds these are all good reasons to see a dermatologist for.
Your dermatologist will examine the sites, use a dermascope to make sure that there are not subtle clues that can help the diagnosis, and oftentimes perform a simple, in-office skin biopsy to get you the correct diagnosis. So if you see a new spot that just doesn't seem right, don't wait until it changes significantly. Make an appointment and see your dermatologist.
