Skin Cancer & Raised or Elevated Moles

Learn if raised or elevated moles can become cancerous from board-certified dermatologist Ahmet Altiner in this Howcast video.

One of the common questions I get from my patients is, "My mole started to stick out. Is this abnormal?" And the answer is it depends. Moles that stick out uniformly as they lose their color is the normal progression of an aging mole.

Like we talked about, moles start out brown and black, and as we grow older they become less and less brown and more and more elevated in a uniform way. However, it's important to note that melanomas can do the same thing, but by getting darker. So a brown spot that starts to stick out, but is getting darker instead of lighter is concerning for a skin cancer and needs a biopsy.
