The palm ball is a four finger change up. Pitchers who struggle throwing with a traditional change up pitch often fiddle around and end up settling on the palm ball. Most noticeably, Satchel Paige, many decades ago, threw an effective palm ball. More recently, Trevor Hoffman became the second all-time closer on the saves list by throwing a palm ball.
The palm ball features four fingers on top of the ball with the thumb set underneath the ball. As with all change ups, pitchers must throw the palm ball with the same arm speed and arm slot as a fast ball. The palm ball is an effective alternative to throwing a change up.
