What Is a Shirodhara Massage?

Learn what a Shirodhara massage is from massage therapist Lara Narayani Golland in this Howcast massage video about Ayurvedic body massage techniques.

Shirodhara is Ayurvedic treatment that is done for treatments during after Panchakarma, as well as for general healing of the mind, and aligning that with the emotions and the spirit. Shirodhara is the warm oil drip, as you see in the treatment. Shirodhara oil is poured through the vessel, and it streams out in a continuous stream.

That stream represents consciousness. The ever flowing energy of consciousness throughout time and space. When a client receives Shirodhara, I notice their whole body gets deep, into a deep sleep, into a deep state. It's said that Shirodhara builds an alpha state in the body, and I've seen it. People will report that they went somewhere, kind of in between here and there.

The benefit, really, is for the mind to be clear of all the impressions that we have. In our modern world we have so many impressions, that we see that we're stimulated by. It's said in Ayurveda, as well as in yoga, that the more that we can clear our minds of the impressions, the deeper we can be in identifying our true source of identity, which is beyond the mind.

Shirodhara is an incredible tool for stress reduction and to calm the mind. Shirodhara should not be done for pregnant women, or for people who have mental disorders such as schizophrenia, because it could be too much for the mind. We want, if a woman is pregnant, to support her energy, in being down, and being in the belly. Also, women who are menstruating should not have Shirodhara. So those are some contraindications and benefits for Shirodhara. If you ever get a chance, get Shirodhara. It's wonderful.
