How to Use Boxing Techniques in UFC

Learn how to use boxing techniques in UFC from boxing coach Adam Colberg in this Howcast video.

In my opinion, in the UFC or professional MMA, boxing is taking over, as far as the movement on your feet. It's more or less a dancing, boxing game, with great Thai kicks, let's not leave out the Thai kickboxing, wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu of course, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

The best fighters in the world have great footwork. Without good footwork, your striking is going to be sub-par.

In this case, Neiman Gracie being tall, we're going to show Neiman a different look while he fights MMA.

All right, Neiman? Assume your traditional fighting stance. Now, Neiman being tall, he has an anatomical advantage here. He's tall. He's not short like a pitbull, so why give up your anatomical advantage?

Neiman, what I want you to do is drop the left hand, lengthen your stance just a little bit. In this case, you might think Neiman is susceptible to a low shot, either a single leg takedown, or a double leg. Since Neiman's hands are dangerous, that won't be the case.

What Neiman's going to do is, Neiman's going to make space, back up, make a little bit of space with one step, and then he's going to pop the chin with an uppercut or a hook, and come with the right hand. This is going to allow his left hand to be accessible and be useful when someone comes in for a shot, versus crouching low, giving up your anatomical height advantage, crouching low and keeping your hands out.

That's not how you want to fight if you're tall. If you're a pitbull, you fight short. If you're tall, fight like a tall fighter. Use your anatomical advantage. Set the punch, set the right hand up with the left hand, come low, or come right to the temple. That's how you do it.

Neiman's going to make space, he's going to pop the chin with the left hand, step back, pop the chin with the left hand, and drop the right hand. Do that again, and don't even turn that front foot over. Neiman's going to step back, pop the chin, just lift the chin a little bit, then come with the right hand, and bring that hand back. Perfect.

Do it again. He's going to make some space, pop the chin with the left hand, and crack with the right hand. That's surely going to be two devastating shots.

All right, again. Watch Neiman as he makes space, while I go for the single leg shot. He's going to make space, come with the hook shot on the temple of my head, so it's going to land just like so, enough to move my head, then snap his right hand over. In this case, I'm going for the double leg, or single leg. I come low, he makes space, one step back, pop the chin, and send the right hand right down the middle. That's how you do it.

If you're tall, stay tall, keep your left hand down, find that chin, and knock your opponent out.
