I get asked, "Can I heat raw food?" The quick answer is yes you can heat raw food. You want to be careful about the temperatures you heat it to. When you heat above 118 degrees you start killing enzymes, and one of the great benefits of raw food is the natural enzymes that are in each food to help our bodies absorb and break them down.
That being said, people like warm food. You can get warm food several ways. One is, the most common way in raw food, is dehydrating something.
There are several ways you can use a dehydrator. You can set the controls and be below the 118 degree threshhold. One of the things you can do is, for instance, let's say you have an entree, and you don't want a cold entree, so you can just put it in the dehydrator maybe 20 minutes. And it's going to be about 110 degrees which is pretty much how you're going to eat food anyway.
Even if you heat food to a really high temperature if you were cooking, by the time it gets to the table and you actually start eating it's more or less close to room temperature. So 100 degrees is quite warm enough to make your palate enjoy warm food.
Another thing you can do to heat raw food without going above that threshhold of 118 degrees is you can use a high powered mixer like a Vitamix or a Blendtec mixer. And when you put it on a high speed it actually is going so quickly it will start to heat the food. Around 90 seconds it will be quite warm. So you can make soups that way and still be below the 118 degrees. You still have a raw dinner, but you're going to get that sensation of warm comfort food.
So those are some of the ways you can use heating without going above the 118 degrees and still enjoy your food.
