Most of the tips that I get asked about hot water heaters is: How can I make it last longer?
One thing we always recommend is putting a pre-filter on the cold water side so that no sediment goes to the bottom of the tank. Once you get sediment in the tank, you have to heat through that sediment, and that reduces the efficiency a lot, and it makes the water heater crack or fail faster.
One of the other things I look at for installation tips is making sure that... Any water heater, any tank is going to leak. So we always put, my company installs a pan underneath all water heaters and an automatic shut off. So if the pan ever fills with water, it shuts the gas and the water off to the water heater, and that's saved a lot of money for flooding, etc.
