How to Get & Keep Clients for Your Graphic Design Business

As a freelancer, how do you get and keep clients? The best way to get and keep clients is to make sure that you're visible online, make sure that you're always reaching out to people that need help, and then also making sure that when you do get a client that you do a good job. That you stick to your deadlines. That you make sure that you're easily reached and that you communicate well, whether it's through phone or email or carrier pigeon. Make sure that you communicate very well to your client.

In doing so, you not only get a return customer, but you also get a referral to other people that may come to your client asking, "Hey, who can I go to?" The biggest part in it, too, is to make sure that you always let them know that you appreciate their business and that you do more than just website design, if you do. Try to upsell in a friendly way. And then always make sure that even if you don't have a project with them that you're just reaching out to your clients. It's good customer service and in the end, it'll help you and your business in the long run.

A better way to be more visible to clients is to make sure that your portfolio is out there. You can enter into design contests that are featured by Communication Arts or How magazine. Or you can even do free work from like Catchafire, or also, like, work for just directly working for people that may have a need, or trying to find RFPs, which are request for proposals to pitch your company, as well as your idea, to get new clients.

I also appreciate cold emailing because it's less invasive than calling and you don't seem really annoying when you do call somebody. So what I usually do is I come up with something really quirky and I put together a list of people that I really want to get in contact with and I feel like they may be able to benefit from my business. And then I'll give them an email and then hope that they reach out. I usually have a pretty good success rate, so it's good to just kind of get out there. Even if you think it's not going to go well, it probably will.
