When Should You Cut Long Hair?

Learn how to know when to cut long hair from Pierre Michel Salon style director Jerome Lordet in this Howcast hair tutorial.

So the question is when to cut your long hair, because everybody who has long hair usually wants it to grow even longer than what they have because that, I don't know, it's a thing. The longer it is, the longer we want. Right?

But there is a point where actually long hair doesn't look good anymore. When you realize that? You have to look at your hair. So first of all, if you take a string of hair, you can feel it in your finger when you go like this how it gets a little rougher at the end. That means it's all split end. That means it needs to be cut. I'm not saying it should be cut a lot, but it should be trimmed a little bit.

Now also another thing, if you're at the bottom of your hair, if it looks like this is your hand here and it looks like this, it's time to cut your hair because that doesn't look nice, and it looks very straggly, without life, and no matter how long it will be, it won't ever look good. Okay?

It's not about how long it is. It's also how healthy it is. Long hair can look terrible if it's not healthy. So make sure you cut your hair at least 6 or 7 weeks. Make sure you take care of your hair by treatment and all that stuff. But the haircut will help a lot, and like I say how to feel when is it time to cut it that's the time to cut it when it gets first of all way too long. When it's past your butt, that might be a little too long, or like I say if it looks like you have a little piece of string at the end, that looks like that, then it's time to cut it. If you cut that little bit, it will bring all your hair up and make you feel like you have beautiful long hair. So this is when it's time to do it, and I think for you it's almost time.

So long hair is beautiful, but don't be afraid to cut a little bit more than you wish for. The more you cut, the better your hair will look. It doesn't mean it's going to get shorter. It is just going to get healthier and prettier. So don't be afraid if you have to cut a little bit more. It will give a little more bounce to your hair.
