When looking at the safest states in the US, we can apply that same model that we that we use for the safest countries. We look at population density, gun ownership rate, military presence, public health infrastructure. What we find it that a state like New Jersey that has a population density of 1,000 people per square mile and a gun ownership rate of roughly 12% or 13%, does not hold up well against a state like Wyoming, that has a population density of about 5.6 people per square mile and a gun ownership rate of upwards of 70%. Where would you rather be?In fact, the entire northeast does not look good in a zombie outbreak. If you've ever needed a good reason not to move to New York City, that's a good reason.
Number 1 on our list is Alaska: Very low population density, rugged population that's used to surviving in the elements, and very, very high gun ownership rate. Great natural resources; you can hunt and scavenge for your food exclusively. On the bottom of the list is New Jersey, and the entire northeast. Not going to do well.
The regions that turn out to be the best are places like the Pacific Northwest; low population density, high gun ownership rate. The northeast is a terrible place to be; it's cold, it's densely populated, and people are generally not used to living a survivalist lifestyle. They expect to go down to the corner store and get their stuff. When that falls through, a lot of people are going to have a lot of problems. The south is always good simply because it's warm, so that's one less survival elements you need to worry about. Granted, zombies aren't going to be freezing in the south either.
A state that ranks right in the middle, but might turn out to be actually very safe is Hawaii. Hawaii is similar to Australia, has a giant moat around it. If the zombie infection doesn't start in Hawaii, they have a good shot at being able to keep it out for a long time. What I would say, though, if you think you want to be in Hawaii for the zombie outbreak, you should move there now because there aren't going to be a lot of charter flights or boats going once the zombies come.
