Learn what a birth control shot is in this Howcast video.

Transcript

The birth control shot is an injection that is usually done in your arm or in your buttock, and it contains progesterone only. This form of birth control needs to be given once every 12 weeks, and is an excellent form of birth control for patients who are not good at taking a pill every day, for patients who cannot use estrogen, patients who have migraines with aura.

If you smoke, you may want to consider using Depo-Provera as a form of birth control until you quit, and you should quit smoking. It is not a good idea to use estrogen and progesterone birth control when you smoke.

If you have a history of blood clot formation, whether during pregnancy, spontaneous blood clot formation, or with the use of oral combined birth control pills that have estrogen and progesterone, this may be a better birth control option for you.
