This form of birth control needs to be given once every 12 weeks, and is an excellent form of birth control for patients who are not good at taking a pill every day, for patients who cannot use estrogen, patients who have migraines with aura.
If you smoke, you may want to consider using Depo-Provera as a form of birth control until you quit, and you should quit smoking. It is not a good idea to use estrogen and progesterone birth control when you smoke.
If you have a history of blood clot formation, whether during pregnancy, spontaneous blood clot formation, or with the use of oral combined birth control pills that have estrogen and progesterone, this may be a better birth control option for you.
