Cialis & Erectile Dysfunction

Learn about Cialis, a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction, in this Howcast video.

Transcript

Cialis is a medication that's commonly prescribed for erectile dysfunction.

It is a medication, in the class of medications is called Phosphodiesterase 5 Inhibitors. What these medications do is block an enzyme within the penile tissues, and this causes the elevation of some other compounds that act as what we call vasodilators. These compounds facilitate relaxation of the smooth muscle in the blood vessels to the penis. When you have this relaxation process it's important for that relaxation process to help stimulate an erection.

The relaxation of the smooth muscles of these blood vessels then leads to increased blood flow into the penile tissues and can then facilitate an erection. Taking the medication itself will not cause an erection, but it will help to not only give you a firmer erection, but help to also sustain an erection for a longer period of time.

The difference between Cialis and several other medications in the same category is that Cialis lasts in your system longer. It take approximately 36 hours for the medication to be cleared out of your system. If you take one dose of Cialis then technically you should not take another dose for several days, otherwise you can have serious side effects from build up of the product in your body.

The benefit to this pharmacological effect is that if you take a pill tonight, then in theory the pill should still be active in your system tomorrow night so that you don't have to take the pill again the next day.

Cialis has also recently come out with a daily version of the pill. This is a lower dose of the medication that is not only designed to help with erectile dysfunction, but there are some studies that have shown there might be some benefit improving urinary flow for men who may have conditions that effect the urine flow through the prostrate area.

These studies have shown that daily Cialis may slightly improve urinary flow. So there may be some benefit to daily Cialis for not only patients with erectile dysfunction, but men who may have some mild prostrate related symptoms such as, slowing of the urinary stream, going to the bathroom more often, waking up at nighttime to go, things like that.

It's a common correlation that men with prostate issues may be more likely to also have erectile dysfunction, so the daily version of Cialis may benefit some of those men.

The advantage of the daily version is that, again, you do not have to necessarily take it 30 minutes prior to sexual activity such as the on demand Cialis which is taken approximately 30 minutes prior to sexual activity. With the daily version then, take the pill once a day just like you would take baby aspirin daily. In theory then you are prepared for sexual activity at any given time.
