Trudi: Hi, I'm Trudi Tapscott.
Britt: And I'm Britt Bergmeister.
Trudi:I always think that there's some really easy things that are the biggest myths in modeling. I don't know if this is true for you, but I'll tell you what I think and then you can say. No, you don't get to keep the clothes that you wear when you're shooting or doing a fashion show. You don't get to keep them. Everyone always asks that question.
Everything is not paid for. You are making an investment in yourself. It is a business, so sometimes when you have to fly somewhere, you're flying somewhere for a job, then the client's paying, but if you're flying somewhere to get a job, like if you have to fly to Milan, nobody's paying for that. There is an investment that's made in the beginning when you're starting out.
Just because you've show up and you have a few pictures and an agent, it doesn't mean you're going to have people who want to book you right away. I think that in the beginning you focus on getting an agent and once you have an agent, you think, "Whew! Here I go. It's going to be fine." And that's not how it works. Having an agent is really the first step. It's getting those clients and getting the jobs that matter. So, in the beginning, your focus is to get an agent, and once you get an agent, then you have a whole other focus. Sometimes that is forgotten. That's really what you're trying to do.
You get up really early, so don't be thinking you're lounging and sleeping in. You get up really early. Photographers are shooting based on the light if they're shooting outdoors, so you get up to meet the sunrise and sometimes you take a break in the day because it's hot, and then you're shooting later. Sometimes it's a night shoot, so you're shooting all night.
You can never possibly imagine what it's like unless you've done it. So there's lots of myths. I think that you have lots of things in your mind when you're trying to figure out what you're supposed to be doing and what it's like. It appears more glamorous than it actually is. It's not such a fabulous world all the time because it's work.
Britt: It is work. At the end of the day, it's a job. You have to treat it as a job. Another big myth is that models don't eat.
Trudi:Yes that is a myth. That's a good one.
Britt: We do. We really do eat. I think nearly every model is obsessed with food and cooking, because our job is our body and maintaining it. I eat a ton, but it's all really healthy. So, you have to adjust your diet, but most of us don't starve ourselves. No, I eat. I like my food. I like going to restaurants. I'm constantly on Yelp and Urban Spoon looking for the best new restaurants. We have our cake slices every once in a while, maybe sometimes more than we should, but no, models do eat.
