Plyometrics is a form of training which involves jumping and using your body weight to create more explosive leg muscles overall. Jumps may include deaf jumping, which means jumping from a box to the ground and then jumping immediately after again, or more typical to sprinters, bounding. The subject of plyometrics from coach to coach and athlete to athlete can be a matter of controversy. Some athletes and coaches believe that it causes more harm than good by putting too much stress on the body. Others swear by the potential they get from it in terms of explosiveness and speed. Plyometrics are an advanced form of workout and not necessarily recommended for beginners.
Two common types of plyometrics involved single leg bounding, in which case a sprinter will use one leg to jump down a track or on a field for a specific distance or alternating legs to do the same thing. Depending on the workout, you may be jumping for height or you may be jumping for distance. Again, I warn to make sure that you are properly prepared for this advanced workout as injuries can result.
