Learn how to create a spot color with Adobe Illustrator from expert Will "Focus" Dubois in this Howcast video.

This is How You Create a Spot Color in Adobe Illustrator.

So, we want to head on over to our Swatch Panel, which will be on the right Window Panel side. Or if it's not there, go to Window, Swatches, and then it will bring it up on the right hand side.

If you look in this window, you can select any of the swatches that are there.

Now, if you don't have the exact swatch color that you want, you can go to the Color Panel. Let's see. You can go to Color Guide, Color Panel, and let's say we go to Show Options here.

We can click the color that we want and we can actually drag it into our Swatches Panel.

Now, let's say I drag this right about here. So it's going to show up in the bottom of our Swatches Panel.

Now, if I want to create a spot color from this color, I have to double click on the actual swatch. Once you double click, a new window, which are Swatch Options, will actually show up.

Now, in this window, you'll notice under Color Type, you have process color.

But if you click that, you'll notice there is spot color.

And then you can change the Color Mode for whatever the color is. And then you can change the actual name of the swatch. Let's say we name this Cool Green, and we click OK.

And you'll notice now we have spot color. And what we can do with spot color is we can actually change the tint of the actual spot color itself by sliding it now. It won't actually change the overall color of the spot color.

And you can tell which colors in your Swatches Panel are a swatch color because if you look in the lower right hand corner of your swatch, there will be a little triangular cut-off area with a little dot in it. That tells you that you have a spot color.

So, let's just show you what a spot color will do when you fill it with that.

If we were to grab that slider and we were to drag it down, you'll notice that the saturation or the actual tint of the actual rectangle that's on the art board changes accordingly.

And you can do that for any color.

If you wanted to pick a new color, you can always double click. Go to your Swatch Options. Click the Color Type Drop Down. Click Spot Color. You could name it Super Red.

And, as before, you'll notice that the actual swatch, get it down here, is a spot color simply by the triangle and the circle located in the lower right.

And that's how you create a spot color in Adobe Illustrator.
