Hi, Alegre from Ember Living. Here today to talk about how to green your water. The easiest way to green your water supply in your household is to get a whole house filter system. Those tend to be a little expensive. They start around $1,000, but they will filter out your water before it even gets into the house. If you want to, if you rent or if you can't afford a whole house system, you can get smaller systems that are at the point of use. So, there are ones that you can put on your tap at your kitchen or on your shower head.
The thing that's most important to look at in these filters is to make sure that they filter out chlorine. Chlorine is a common disinfectant in most municipal water supplies and it's not good for your lungs, your hair, your skin. It's a common irritant for most of us, so filtering that out is really important. The rule of thumb with filters is size does matter. The bigger the filter, the more filtering that is going of your water. So, look for filters that are pretty large in size. Two brands that I like are Ever Pure and Aquasana [SP]. They both have filters that I think are very good at removing the most important contaminants and you can really taste the difference in the water when you're drinking it.
Secondly, don't store your water in plastic. I'm not a fan of plastic especially when it comes in touch with . . . I think plastic is great for a lot of things. It's great for umbrellas. It's great for raincoats. It's not great for storing food and beverages. So, use glass containers or use reusable stainless steel containers and that'll really keep down the number of chemicals that are entering your blood stream through the liquids that you drink.
Finally, if you can't afford a filter, a really quick easy tip for neutralizing the chlorine in your water is vitamin c. So, squeezing lemon in your water does more than just add nice flavor. It actually helps neutralize the chlorine. For instance, if you're giving your baby a bath and you can't afford a water filter, get some vitamin c powder to sprinkle into the water and that'll help neutralize the chlorine that's in the water.
