You want to find out what she likes most importantly because you don't want to buy her the wrong shaped stone. You do want to do some research on the four C's, know the basics, don't obsess over every single detail of it, but know your color, clarity, cut and carat weight then you're covered. You do want to buy a stone with a GIA Certificate. It's really important not only for your stone's identify but to know the quality and so that you'll be able to insure it and have it appraised.
You do want to select the right jeweler. It's really important because you want to have a relationship with them for a lifetime. Don't take any chances. You make sure you want to buy something that's classic, timeless and elegant. Do take notes and pay attention if she admires a friend's ring or she see's something in a catalog she likes.
