Can Breast Implants Make Me Sick?

Learn if breast implants can make you sick from plastic surgeon Robert J. Morin, M.D. in this Howcast video.

We are going to talk about weather breast implants can make you sick. Just like anything in medicine and surgery there is a risk of complications anytime any medical or surgical intervention takes place. Breast implants specifically have a little bit of a controversial and tumultuous past, especially in the United States. In 1992 there was a concern about silicon breast implants causing problems, causing cancer or causing auto-immune diseases and generally making women sick. So the FDA in the United States took the silicone off of the market.

They were off of the market for a total of fourteen years. During those fourteen years extensive studies took place because they were still used in breast reconstruction and they were still used in the rest of the world.

After fourteen years in 2006, the FDA determined breast implants and specifically silicone breast implants do not cause cancer and do not cause auto-immune disorders as they had thought they might have fourteen years before. So, in 2006 silicone breast implants came back on the market and currently there are three companies that make silicone breast implants and the FDA has determined that they are safe.

Again, there is always the risk of complications and just like anything in medicine we could find out ten years from now that what we believe today is not true. However, currently the FDA believes that silicone breast implants are safe.
