Do Breast Implants Affect Mammograms?

Find out if breast implants affect mammograms from plastic surgeon Robert J. Morin, M.D. in this Howcast video.

We are discussing weather or not breast implants effect mammograms. The number of women who get breast cancer with breast implants and without breast implants is the same. Many studies have determined the presence of breast implants does not increase the risk of cancer breast cancer. That being said there is a slight difference in terms of the ability to visualizes the breast while getting a mammogram. This is something that has been studied extensively and the literature and today there are excellent techniques that allow as much of the breast tissue to be visualized as much as possible. So, it's very important for you to go for a mammogram as directed by your doctor based on your age and your family history.

But it's very important that the person who performs the mammogram knows that you have breast implants and that the radiologist that reads the mammogram also knows that there are breast implants. The technique that they use is different they move the implant out of the way then they compress the breast to try and visualize as much as the breast tissue as possible. When they use this technique the amount of breast tissue that they are able to image is very close to but still some what less than the amount of breast tissue that they are able to visualize when there is no breast implant.

All that being said this has been study extensively and its generally agreed upon that the risk of breast cancer is not higher and the detection of breast cancer is not later in women with breast implants compared to women without breast implants.
