Breast Implants Above Muscle vs. Below Muscle

Learn the difference between breast implants above the muscle and those below from plastic surgeon Robert J. Morin, M.D. in this Howcast video.

Transcript

We're discussing the decision of whether tor not to place the breast implant above or below the pectoralis major muscle. The percotralis major muscle is the muscle that sits in this location on the breast wall. Usually the implant is placed underneath the pectoralis major muscle. The reason for this is it places as much tissue as possible in between the implant and the outside world.

That decreases the risk of certain complications and it also decreases the likelihood that one would be able to feel the breast implant when touching the breasts. Certain complication like capsule or contracture are believed to be lower when the implant is placed below the muscle. So, when deciding whether or not to place the implant above or below the muscle, in my patients I recommend placing the breast implant below the pectoralis major muscle. The breast implant is better protected from the outside world, there's a lower risk of certain complications and it's less likely that you're gonig to be able to feel the breast implant when touching the breasts.
