We're discussing who is an ideal candidate for breast reduction surgery. Breast reduction surgery is one of the most satisfying surgeries from a patient's perspective in plastic surgery. There are many women whose breasts are so large that they cause them many problems throughout their lives: back pain, difficulty with activities of daily living, the list goes on and on.
Any woman who has breasts that are so large that they're causing back pain, neck pain, pain syndromes that are likely related to the large size and heavy weight of the breasts are excellent candidates for breast reduction surgery. One of the most important things for breast reduction surgery, however, is that these women need to be non-smokers.
When you reduce the size of a breast, you move the position of the nipple and you cut off a substantial amount of the blood supply to the nipple. In smokers, therefore, there's a very high risk of complications, including wound complications and survival of the nipple complications. Therefore, I don't perform this procedure on smokers. But in general, a woman whose breasts are so large that they cause her pain and interfere with her activities of daily living is a good candidate for a breast reduction surgery.
