Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Demo - Part 4 [Commentary] [HD]

Check out this online demo of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (Part 4), the action RPG from 38 Studios and Big Huge Games.

Vince: Now roll away, roll away. Bring out the bow. Camera kind of automatically adjusted there, interesting. All right, so we've got a more direct sort of control scheme than traditional RPGs. We're going to give this stuff a try now.

Steve: How's it going Vince.

Vince: Hey, Steve. It's going pretty well. It was, until you showed up anyway.

Steve: Oh, okay.

Vince: I'm going to try and burn our way through here with our staff. I mean it's interesting how directed this. I don't know if anyone can hear what we're saying right now.

Steve: That's okay.

Vince: Yeah, yeah. Bye. How far is the reach of this staff? Seems like it's got a fairly good range but it's not exactly a range weapon. I got to get in there. Nice, nice. Killing it with fire. What's up here? Any secrets? Nope. What's that? Spider Sac, all right. Yeah, looks like that's all junk. No! See, that's the thing I was talking about. Good bye. I was just trying to sprint but because that dude was there, I talked to him instead. All right, this is a good... that's a pretty fun mix. I'm going to stick with this bow and staff. The targeting on the bow seems to be a little sticky, won't really let me switch who I'm targeting when I've got the string drawn. So that seems to be one of the trade offs for attacking at range. No, Damn it! Okay, that thing again.

Encel: I'll see you on the outside, if fate wills it.

Vince: Back! oh, friendly. See? How do I cancel the shot? Roll? Can I roll out of it? That seem sort of an elegant. Oh, that's the item radial. That's was L2 that I hit there. We can map a slot too, let's do the healing potion. Sure, why not. Oops! What about block. Okay, the block was probably the best one to cancel a bow shot.

Encel: This is where we part ways, but take whatever you want from this armor, we might have a few things that would fit you. Just make sure you get to Hugues! We can hold off the Tuatha here.

Vince: Ah-ha! Persuasion check.

Encel: I suppose these might be able to help. Of the Tuatha realize what you are, you'll need them.

Vince: That's not for boating at all.

Encel: We can't risk you getting killed. You're proof that the Well can work! Don't you realize what that means? Just keep going past the top of the Well. Hugues will be there in his study. I'll see you on the outside, if fate wills it.

Praetorian: A lot of good Gnomes died today. You'd better be worthy it.

Claude: The scholars are soft. The Tuatha will find my Praetorians are a tougher breed!

Vince: All right, let's get these stuff. Looks like mostly the same stuff that we had before, just in case you missed it earlier in the tutorial here.

Praetorian: You come out of the well and the Tuatha show up? That can't be a coincidence.

Vince: R3. Yeah, discovered that earlier. The pulsing circle on the mini map I assume is the objective marker, or maybe it's an O for objective.

Fomorous Hugues: You've made it! And look at you! Even with all you've been through... the Tuatha, your return from the dead. Please forgive me. You must be terribly confused by all of this. I am Fomorous Hugues, and this is my laboratory at Allestar. Everything you see here is dedicated to one thing, the Well of Souls. The pursuit of immortality! And you... you're my first success! If we only had the time! There's so much we might learn from one another. Too much to explain right now. The Tuatha have come to stop my work, but I don't believe they know about you. Not yet. What's important is getting you out of here safely. You're the only proof of what we've achieved here. I may not be able to save the Well, but I can ensure that its only success is safe. Of course you do. Please, though we must hurry.

Vince: I guess they highlighted option is what moves the plot along.

Fomorous Hugues: Good, good. We can't waste time! We're in the Faelands, miles away from the front lines. I thought we were safe enough from the war. But it seems some of the Tuatha found their way here anyway.

Vince: So the dual dialog systems are little odd but if you've played Mass Effect and other types of RPGs before, it fairly intuitive once you get over the initial disorientation.

Fomorous Hugues: Fascinating! Simply astounding. I'm not certain what's caused it, but somehow... Yes, as I was saying. I'm not sure what... Perhaps I should go see...

Praetorian: Sire, sire! Mister Hugues! The Tuatha reached the lab! They're inside the--

Fomorous Hugues: No! We've got to get you out of here now. Quickly! Follow the path to the town of Gorhart. Find Agarth. He's a friend, and he may be able to help. No matter what else, stay alive. Go! Go!

Vince: Aw! I like how he's tougher than he looked. How do I get out of here? Oh, the door. That was easy. Yeah, sprint I already figured that out too and then I accidentally talked to people. Oh, soldier. Whoa! Out of nowhere. That's a nice explosion kind of thing. That was easy. Camera doesn't seem to follow your movement too tightly. It's a little awkward to have to be moving the right stick while you're holding down X. Oh boy. Big guy.
