Data analysis is invaluable for mathematicians, statisticians, and everyone in between. Show off your statistical prowess with a few calculations and some big fancy words.
- Step 1: In an empty cell, enter the equal sign and then go to Insert on the menu bar and select Function.
- Step 2: Select the Quartile function and, in the Array box, indicate the range of cells to use. Enter a one in the Quart box for first quartile, and then click OK.
- Step 3: Repeat the process to insert the quartile function for the third quartile, entering a three in the Quart box. Compare the results to your handwritten results and prove your awesomeness to colleagues and friends alike.

- Step 4: Use Microsoft's Excel spreadsheet program to list the data set with one value per cell.
- Step 5: Find the median of the greater half of the set. If there is an even number of values, add the middle two values and divide by two to find the median. This is the upper, or third, quartile.
- Step 6: Separate the data into two equal halves.
- TIP: If the data set does not have an even number of values, use the middle number in the set in both the lower and upper halves.
- Step 7: Find the median, or middle number, of the lesser half of the data. If there is an even number of values, add the middle two values and divide by two to find the median. This is the lower, or first, quartile.
- Step 8: List the data set in numeric order from least to greatest.
