How To Convert an Attic Into a Bedroom
Converting an attic into a bedroom is an excellent way to add living space to your home. But be sure you keep the following guidelines in mind if you decide to do so.
Instructions
- Step 1: Install short knee walls to block off steeply sloping walls. Add partition walls to divide the space if you wish.
- Step 2: Extend electrical wiring to the attic for switches and light fixtures. Run plumbing lines if needed for sprinkler systems, toilets, and sinks.
- FACT: The word _attic_ comes from the root word for Athens.
- TIP: Use vapor barrier insulation to prevent vapor condensation, except in very dry climates.
- Step 3: Add insulation. Insulation prevents warm air from escaping in winter, and reduces heat accumulation in summer.
- Step 4: Make sure the existing attic floor can support its new use. If not, replace the attic floor joists.
- Step 5: Provide adequate natural lighting by installing a gable wall window, skylight, or dormer window.
- TIP: Make sure the windows supply sufficient ventilation.
- Step 6: Check local building codes about ceiling height, emergency fire escape, and other restrictions that may apply to the conversion.
