How To Fight Back Against a Date Rape Attempt

Learn to use self-defense tactics to fight back against an attacker.

Instructions

  • Step 1: If the attack continues, fight through your fear and don't succumb to it. Use your hips and legs to propel them off you and attack their unprotected areas such as the groin and throat. Hit, bite, gouge, or twist, and yell for help.
  • Step 2: Do everything you can to avoid being taken to a secondary site. Make a scene, continuing calling for help and looking for the opportunity to escape.
  • FACT: In 1976, Nebraska was the first state to do away with the marital rape exemption, which essentially legalized spousal rape.
  • Step 3: Try to think or talk your way out of the situation. Speak in a loud, forceful tone to try to persuade them not to continue their attack.
  • TIP: Date-rape can easily be slipped into someone's drink. Refuse any drinks that weren't ordered by you and never leave your drink unattended.
  • Step 4: Go on a group date or choose an open, public place for your first date. Don't let an aggressive dater isolate you away from the crowd. Only when you know the person better should you move onto solo dates.
  • TIP: Alcohol is often a contributing factor in date rapes. Do not drink to the point of losing control.
  • Step 5: Trust your instincts -- if your date is too persistent or their behavior is violating your boundaries, get out of the situation. Don't accept a ride from them -- find another way home so you don't risk being alone with them in their car.
  • Step 6: Sign up for a self-defense class so you know the basics about fighting back against a physical attack.
