How To Get Your Driver’s License

Depending on the state, your age may vary, but there are a few general rules to keep in mind for getting a driver’s license.

Instructions

  • Step 1: Go down to the DMV to take the written exam and your eye exam. Bring your Social Security number and birth certificate for ID, plus the registration fee (up to $85).
  • FACT: California has issued at least six driver’s licenses to people with the legal name Jesus Christ.
  • Step 2: Once you meet the requirements, call your local DMV and schedule your road test.
  • Step 3: Don’t worry if you fail the first test; about half the drivers do. When you do pass—and we know you will—congratulations! You are now licensed to thrill.
  • Step 4: Arrange for whatever driver’s education your state requires. Some states require between 20 and 50 hours on on-the-road experience, often in the company of a professional instructor.
  • TIP: If you are in high school, take advantage of your school’s Driver’s Education course, which provides both classroom instruction and driving lessons. Your other option is privately-run driver’s education programs.
  • TIP: Many DMVs offer sample tests online. This is a great way to get a sneak peek at the test format.
  • TIP: The DMV website, www.dmv.org, provides state-to-state regulations and requirements for obtaining a driver’s license.
  • Step 5: Study the manual. You’ll need to pass a written test on the rules of the road before you’re allowed to get behind the wheel.
