How To Stain a Garage Floor
If your concrete floor has seen better days, this guide will show you how to breathe new life into that gray canvas.
Instructions
- Step 1: Use the paint roller to apply the stain and the small paintbrush to reach corners and get around obstacles such as shelves and tables.
- TIP: Work from the back of the garage toward the door. Don't paint yourself into a corner.
- Step 2: Wait at least 24 hours before using the floor and then retouch any missed or weak spots.
- FACT: The Hoover Dam contains over 4.5 million cubic yards of concrete, exceeding the mass of the Great Pyramid of Giza.
- Step 3: Apply the acid etching solution to open the pores of the cement and allow the stain to penetrate.
- Step 4: Put on protective gear, including a respirator or mask, safety glasses, work boots, and grungy clothing before using any chemicals.
- TIP: Test for previously applied sealant by dribbling some water onto the floor. If it beads up, the floor has been sealed and will not accept any stain.
- Step 5: Fill cracks and crevices in the floor using epoxy or quick-set cement.
- Step 6: Remove ignition sources, such as refrigerators or heaters, and unplug any equipment or tools, as the stain fumes are highly flammable.
- Step 7: Clean the floor thoroughly with a degreaser. Power wash tough spots to remove stubborn grime and dirt.
